The City of Perth Skyworks is the largest Community Celebration of Australia Day

2014 marked the 30th anniversary of the City of Perth Skyworks. Annual Events include a free Entertainment Zone on Langley Park, Air and Water Show will entertain above and on the Swan River, Survival Perth in Supreme Court Gardens and of course the spectacular Skyworks fireworks finale which will include a special laser and water show visible from Langley Park and South Perth.

Fireworks start at 8PM

Event Duration: The Skyworks show usually runs for half an hour and has involved fireworks launched from bridges, barges, and buildings in the CBD.

The fireworks are choreographed to a soundtrack which is played on the radio while the fireworks are underway. Many people travel into the inner-city to watch the event, with others watching from the tops of hills and bridges

Event History: The Skyworks started in 1985 in conjunction with 96fm, and is now one of the most popular events in Perth. Some people camp out from early morning to get the best view. Good viewing points are South Perth, Kings Park, and the Perth foreshore, while the flat nature of the Swan Coastal Plain allows viewing from elevated suburban locations further away.

In 2005 and 2006 onwards, Foti Fireworks were in charge of the fireworks. In 2007, Howard and Sons were responsible for the fireworks and Laser System Europe were responsible for the new laser show

Perth Ready for Biggest Australia Day fireworks

THE country's biggest fireworks display will light up the sky over the Swan River on Australia Day.

More than 300,000 people are expected to gather along the Swan River foreshore for the 30th City of Perth Australia Day Skyworks, where freestyle motocross stunts and a paintball competition will thrill, along with the traditional family entertainment of bouncy castles, minigolf, face painting, water slides, rock climbing and animals.

"The event is the largest Australia Day occasion in the country," Lord Mayor Lisa Scaffidi said.

The Circus Joseph Ashton will provide free shows of trapeze, high wires and clowns.

Vintage aircraft, jets, planes in formation and helicopters will also take to the sky, as well as fire-bombers demonstrating a water drop.

Skywriters and skydivers will entertain crowds while the RAAF will fly in close formation with daring high-speed aerobatics.

The best viewing spots for the 30-minute pyrotechnic display will be at Langley Park, Kings Park, Supreme Court Gardens and South Perth foreshore.

Some designated alcohol zones will be set up and police warn there will be a zero-tolerance approach to alcohol-fuelled antisocial behaviour.

"Police will be highly visible and will be moving through the crowds to identify and respond to any issues that arise," a spokeswoman said.

Revellers have also been warned that a fire ban will be in place so all sparklers and barbecues will not be permitted.

Fremantle and Cockburn will celebrate their third annual Indian Ocean Fireworks at Bathers Beach with a free sausage sizzle, a "children's corner" and performances from artists before the 20-minute pyrotechnics display.

There is a zero-tolerance approach to public drinking and antisocial behaviour at that event.

About 40,000 spectators are expected to view the show from the Bathers Beach foreshore, the Roundhouse, Esplanade Reserve, North Mole, Monument Hill, South Beach and Fishing Boat Harbour.

Lightning and Fireworks Ignite Perth Skies in Stunning Australia Day Skyshow

Crowd numbers were slightly down on last year, but the Australia Day celebrations in Perth still attracted 250,000, despite the heat and rain.

Police said today that 139 arrests and summons were made statewide during the Skyworks.

There were 169 move-on notices issued, 67 alcohol related offences and 39 people were charged with disorderly conduct.

Police said four people were charged with driving under the influence with six people caught driving with a blood alcohol level over 0.08%.

There were nine assault charges laid, three assault on a public officer charges and seven drug related offences.

But West Australians were well-behaved during Australia Day celebrations across the state yesterday, police said.

Two Big Australia Day Skyshows for Perth

The biggest Australia Day party will again be in Perth with the country's biggest fireworks skyshow on the Swan River foreshore.

The City of Perth Skyworks will light up the sky from 8pm (WST), with an Australian Spirit theme.

But before the pyrotechnics begin, the city will also host free entertainment throughout the afternoon for families.

The Youth Zone concert at Langley Park will begin at 4.30pm with headline acts Amy Meredith and Stone Circle, as well as paintballing and cars.

Earlier, Survival Perth will be held in the Supreme Court Gardens to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history and culture.

Aboriginal artists will perform music over six hours including Kwarbah Djookian, James Scott, Ulla Shay, Walkabout Boys, Bartlett Brothers and The Yabu Band.

Across the river, the City of South Perth will host Celebration Zone at Sir James Mitchell Park with various entertainment and activities.

For those south of the river, the City of Fremantle will celebrate Australia Day with a free sausage sizzle and entertainment, as well as face painting and giant bubbles.

Performers will include the Vegemite Dancers, Aboriginal Dancers, Sunshine Brothers and Blue Shaddy, and the Village Art Markets will also be operating at the Esplanade.

From 8pm, the Cities of Fremantle and Cockburn will co-host the Indian Ocean Skyshow, launching the fireworks from a barge 300m off the coast at Bathers Bay.

Spectators are advised to view the show from Bathers Beach foreshore, the Round House, Esplanade Park, North Mole, Monument Hill, South Beach and Fishing Boat Harbour.

It's expected to reach 40C on Australia Day so people are being warned to remain hydrated.

The Fire and Emergency Services Authority (FESA) warns those attending the Skyworks to leave the sparklers at home because they can easily start a fire.

Police will also be out in force to target anti-social behaviour and alcohol-fuelled violence.

Commissioner Karl O'Callaghan said there would be designated alcohol zones.

"Drinking outside the zones is against the law and offenders face a $200 fine," he said.

"Under the Liquor Act, police have the power to seize alcohol, even if its unopened, from anyone drinking and deemed to be causing or likely to cause undue offence, annoyance, disturbance or inconvenience to others."

Last year, police issued almost 50 move on notices and 23 people were arrested.

What not to bring to watch the Skyworks (Perth Skyshow)

The City of Perth and City of South Perth Special Event Local Law limits people from bringing large stereos, spas, fridges and other large objects to the foreshore on Australia Day………………………………yes, believe it or not but people have tried to bring these things in the past !

These items including loud stereos may be impounded.

Road Closures - South Perth

The roads bounded by Labouchere Road, Angelo Street, Douglas Ave and Mill Point Road to Way Road, will be closed from 8am to 9pm. Unless you reside in this area, access will only be granted by providing the traffic controllers with a City of South Perth approved access permit.

Making the most of the City of Perth Australia Day Skyworks

Pedestrian and bicycle access

South Perth
The City of South Perth is introducing fenced off and supervised bike parking at various events in 2010. The Australia Day Family Zone will be the first event to introduce this new service. Don't forget to bring your bike lock.

At Sir James Mitchell Park there will be an emergency services area fenced between the river and Mill Point Road. The paths in that area may be closed during the day and all pedestrians and cyclists may be required to detour around the emergency services area.

Narrows Bridge
The Narrows Bridge eastern footpath will be closed all day. Pedestrians and cyclists will be directed onto the western footpath.

Horseshoe Bridge
Pedestrian access from Wellington Street to Roe Street via the Horseshoe Bridge will be possible from 8pm on Australia Day.
